Honeycomb Paper vs Bubble Wrap: Plastic-Free Protective Packaging in NZ

2 min read

More New Zealand customers now expect parcels without plastic. Honeycomb packing paper is one of the easiest swaps: it wraps and cushions like bubble wrap, but it is paper. So is it right for your business? Here is an honest comparison.

What is honeycomb packing paper?

Honeycomb packing paper is kraft paper cut with a pattern of small slits. When you pull it, it opens into a 3D honeycomb shape that grips the item and absorbs shock. It is flexible, lightweight and stores flat on the roll until you stretch it.

Our roll is 500mm wide x 250m long, brown, and weighs about 10.5kg.

When honeycomb paper is the better choice

  • E-commerce brands that want plastic-free or paper-based packaging.

  • Gift, homewares, candles, cosmetics and wine where presentation matters.

  • Businesses short on storage space.

  • Wrapping items before they go into a carton with kraft paper as void fill.

When bubble wrap still makes sense

  • Very fragile or sharp-edged items such as glass panels or electronics with screens.

  • Goods that may get wet in transit or storage.

  • Small, low-cost jobs where a few metres is all you need. Our 300mm x 110m bubble wrap roll suits these (Auckland delivery).

For high-volume dispatch, air cushion film is another option if you have an air cushion machine.

How to pack with honeycomb paper

  1. Pull the paper out so the honeycomb opens fully.

  2. Wrap the item in 2 to 3 layers, more for glass and ceramics.

  3. Secure the wrap with a small piece of packaging tape.

  4. Fill gaps in the carton with kraft paper so the item cannot move.

  5. Seal the carton and add a Fragile Handle With Care label.

For large items such as furniture and framed art, use corrugated cardboard rolls, which are made from recycled material and come in widths from 600mm to 1800mm.
